Mother, daughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter… London based Czech artist Tereza Stehlikova explores four generations of family and cultural history, memories and delicate ties through an on-going film project. She will present a selection of these short films, and together with Dr Claire Pajaczkowska of the Institute Marangoni discuss the reality and myths surrounding the mother-daughter relationship, the power of tradition, and feminist psychoanalysis.
Part of Stehliková’s time-based project exploring the unique and often complex interconnections between four generations of women within her family, each film stages a small family ritual, sometimes combined with documentary style dialogue, exploring the bonds between the women while also touching on the hidden issues and concerns of the family’s past. The intimate personal histories are inevitably interwoven with the crucial historical events of the past hundred years of the Czech Republic. Stehliková’s approach is informed by her research into the communication of embodiment in the moving image, while using multi-sensory aesthetics.

Tereza Stehlíková is as an artist and works as a senior lecturer in still & moving image theory / practice, at University of Westminster, as well as a visiting lecturer at the Royal College of Art. She holds a PhD from the RCA, where she researched the tactile language of moving image. She is currently engaged in a cross-disciplinary research, investigating how moving image can be used to communicate embodied experience. In particular, Stehlikova focuses on use of food and performance to explore the fluid boundary between inside and outside, the subjective and the objective, and the role of sensory aesthetics and embodied memory in informing our emotional responses to her work. Stehlikova is also a founding member of Sensory Sites, an international collective based in London, generating collaborative exhibitions, installations and research projects that explore multi-sensory perception and bodily experience. Her work has been presented and published internationally in film festivals, symposia, exhibitions as well as various publications such as Vertigo magazine, Artesian and Go Together Press.

Claire Pajaczkowska
Claire Pajaczkowska is Tutor in Fashion and Design History at the Institute Marangoni, London. Author of essays and books including The Sublime Now (Cambridge Scholars Press, 2009) and Shame and Sexuality : Psychoanalysis and Visual Culture ed with Ivan Ward (Routledge, 2008), Editorial Board of Textile, the Journal of Cloth and Culture, and Fashion, Film and Consumption (Berg Publishers).
She was one of the makers of the film ‘Sigmund Freud’s Dora : a case of mistaken identity’, and continues research into continues research into the maternal and other facilitating environments.
